Fed: Labor MPs should fall in behind Beazley on IVF

Opposition backbenchers say all Labor Party MPs should support leader KIM BEAZLEY'S
position on the IVF issue.

Tasmanian Labor MP DICK ADAMS says he expects caucus to fall in behind Mr BEAZLEY in
his opposition to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD'S plan to amend the Sex Discrimination Act
to allow states to stop women without male partners using IVF treatment.

And New South Wales Labor MP MARK LATHAM says the call for a conscience vote on the
issue is the craziest argument he has ever heard.

Mr LATHAM says it's a question of family policy -- are single and lesbian women suitable
for raising children under the IVF program.

He says Labor has been caucusing on family policy for 100 years -- and they'll do
so again today.
