Fed: Vaile says WTO drugs deal good sign for farm trade
Trade Minister MARK VAILE says a breakthrough deal letting poorer countries importcheap generic medicines is a hopeful sign for freeing up world trade in farm products.
Under the World Trade Organisation agreement, poorer countries will be able to overrideinternational patents and import cheap drugs to fight killer diseases like AIDS and malaria.
The deal was reached in Geneva overnight -- less than two weeks before trade ministersmeet to review the trade talks' progress in the Mexican resort of Cancun.
Mr VAILE says the agreement is a good sign for the struggling Doha round of free trade talks.
An impasse over farm trade has already dragged the Doha round over deadline and isshaping up as the key issue at Cancun, now the drugs issue is out out of the way.
